What to Do When a Tree Comes Down on Your Roof

Homes in Stokes Valley, Wainuiomata, Ngaio and Crofton Downs often sit right beside bush and big trees. In a strong storm, a falling branch or tree can punch through roofing, break rafters and let rain straight into the house. It is stressful, but working through it in the right order keeps everyone safe and limits the damage.

Once people are safe, it helps to have a roofer lined up for emergency roof work after storm damage, so the opening can be covered and the structure checked as soon as conditions allow.

First steps

  • Get everyone out of rooms under the damaged area
  • Stay well clear of any fallen power lines and call the lines company or 111
  • Turn off power to wet areas at the switchboard if it is safe to do so
  • Move valuables and electronics away from water

Do not climb up

A roof with a tree on it can be unstable, and branches can shift without warning. Removing the tree is a job for an arborist, and the roofer works alongside them once it is safe. Wait for them rather than trying to drag branches off yourself.

Temporary weatherproofing

Once the tree is clear, the roofer will cover the hole with heavy tarpaulins or temporary sheeting and fix it so it will not lift in the next gust. They will also check rafters and ceiling framing for damage before any permanent repair is planned.

Insurance

Photograph the damage from the ground before anything is moved, keep receipts for emergency work and contact your insurer early. Insurers generally expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, so arranging temporary protection quickly is important.
